Dino softball opens region play
For a team that has lost several close games lately, the pain of losing by 10 in a region game was was pretty tough to swallow. Region leading North Sanpete, showed the Dinos the door with a 10-0 spanking in Carbon's region opener. But the Lady Dinos returned the favor to the Emery Spartans two days later as they sent them packing with a 9-1 drubbing.
On Tuesday, the Hawks put up four quick ones to set the tone in the first inning. They added two in the second and three more in the fourth. Posting one more in the fifth without a Dino score ended the game in five.
The Dinos only managed two hits in the game against a good North Sanpete pitcher. The Hawks hit well and Carbon's defense only committed one error in the game.
"They (North Sanpete) are a good team and to be honest about it, we didn't show up to play. We were intimidated by them. That is some of our youth showing. We just need to be prepared to play good teams like them," said coach Tony Pinedo about the loss.
But on Thursday, the Dinos did come to play. Carbon pitcher Kenzie Cave struck out the side in the top of the first and then let the Dino bats go to work. They had crossed the plate to take the early lead when Cave went back to work with another perfect inning. She then helped her own cause with a blast over the left field fence. Carbon had a 5-0 lead.
Emery made a little noise in the third with a couple of hits and sent one home. With a pair of outs and runners at the corners, Cave threw one past Carbon catcher Brianne Vogrinic and the Spartan runner tried to score. Cave made the tag as she covered the plate and the Emery rally was over. They didn't score again in the game.
The Dinos added three insurance runs in the fifth. Then in the sixth, Kylee Lessar killed a Spartan pitch as she sent it well over the left center field fence. The ball cleared not only the chain link, but the cars parked watching the game.
"Hopefully we can keep it going," said Pinedo after the win. "We really played tough. The only good thing about the loss is that it was on the road and we won our home game. That is what you can really hope for; is to win all your home games and steal one or two on the road. We play Delta on the road on Tuesday and if we can take that one we will be sitting in great shape in region play."
The road game against the Rabbits is the Dino's only game for the week. Their next home game is April 14 against Juan Diego.
