Cowboys fall to Carbon kickers
Things keep getting better for the Carbon High Dino soccer squad.
They started off preseason with a couple of very close losses, then a tie. Now they have scored a big win, 4-1, over Grantsville on Saturday morning.
The Cowboys put the first point up on the board on a breakaway shot. Carbon stepped up their offense and soon Fernando Mendoza sent one past the Cowboy goalie to tie it up.
A penalty was called on Grantsville in the goal area and then Jose Munoz sent the penalty kick in for the second Dino score of the half. And then it didn't take the kids from Carbon long before Mendoza came up with a breakaway of his own and sent the third goal of the period into the net for the Dinos.
In the second half both teams played some tough defense and neither could get one across for a point. Grantsville was called for another penalty and this time Cal Samuelson did the honors for the Dinos and sent it in for the final score of the game.
Coach Patrick Clifford was pleased with the overall performance of his squad. "We played well and passed the ball well. We had 26 shots on goal in the first half compared to their six. The team is really starting to come together as we get nearer to region (play)."
Region action begins this Wednesday with a home match-up between Carbon and North Sanpete. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m. on the field behind the Carbon High.
