Dino Baseball falls big to Payson

If pre-season play is a place to shake out the bugs, then the Carbon Dinos have a lot of shaking still to do. In their first game of the season against a good 4A Payson team they showed their weaknesses and opened with a 16-0 loss.

The Carbon coaching staff could only make notes of things the team needs to do as they watched both their pitchers struggle off the mound and their defense struggle to make routine plays.

"I know this is a young team," remarked Carbon Coach Troy Moynier, "But they have to do the fundamentals. We can't play a good team like Payson and give them extra outs. But on a good note we got some hitting off their good pitcher and I was glad to see that."

Unfortunately for the Dinos, the Payson hurler also had a good pick-off move and he was successful four times to take the Dino runners back off the bag.

Carbon now heads to St. George to play a tournament and Moynier knows they have their work cut out for them. They will have to face the likes of Dixie and Bear River. Both teams are strong contenders in their respective regions.

"We have some bugs to work out," concluded Moynier. "We definitely have a lot of growing to do if we want to contend this season."

The Dinos will be on the road for several tournaments until March 24 when they host Moab. Game time for that battle will begin at 2:30 p.m.
