1926-2009

MOAB - Joseph Henry Dowd Jr., 82, died Feb. 3, 2009.

He was born in Sego Canyon on July 21, 1926 to Joseph Henry Dowd and Lena Mae Turner. When he was one year old, his family moved to Latuda.

He attended public schools and graduated from Carbon County High. Immediately afterwards, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during WWII.

After the war, Joe returned to Price, where he met and married Gloria Jean Zanelli. They had two children, a daughter and a son. Joe and Gloria were married for 35 years.

He worked as a purchasing agent at the Hiawatha mine. In 1954, the family moved to Moab, where he managed the Sunset Motel. During the uranium boom, he opened Plateau Supply. Later, he was the purchasing agent for Rio Algom, where he worked until his retirement in 1988.

On Aug. 28, 1990, he married Marjorie Orr. They traveled a lot. However, Joe never forgot that Utah was his home. When returning from each trip, he would hum and whistle the whole way back.

Everyone enjoyed the delightful stories he told of his youth - those of his old buddies, the gang, his love of playing baseball and golf and hunting and fishing.

Throughout the years, he was known as Jay.

He was proud of his Irish heritage and let everyone know it.

In his own special way, he touched all who knew him.

Joe was preceded in death by wife, Gloria; his mother and father, Joe and Lena; a sister, Jeri Pilling; and his brother-in-law, Dan Pilling. He is survived by his wife, Margie, Petal, Miss. He is also survived by his children, Linda (Dave) Warner, Moab; and Joseph Ray (Debbie) Dowd, Moab. He is survived by his brothers, Ted (Janice) Dowd, Smithfield; and Mike (Martha) Dowd, Peoria, Ariz.; and his sisters, Lorraine (Arnold) Grundvig, Salt Lake City; Helen (Bob) Mitten, Moab; his five grandchildren, Sarah, Tessa, Joe, Jeff and Sadie; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him also.
