Divers place second at state
On Thursday the Carbon High school boys diving team captured the second place trophy at the Utah State Diving Championships at Brigham Young University.
It was a tight race between Jordan High School who placed first and the three other teams in the race for the championship, Carbon, Brighton and Highland High School, the last two which ended up third and fourth in the team race.
For Carbon High individually, Sammy Maranite placed seventh overall. Sammy was four points out of placing in fifth. Nathan Hepworth placed 10th and Nick Torres was close behind in 11th place. Kaleb Kulow placed 13th and Collin Fleck placed 14th.
The top 16 boys made the finals and received points for their team.
"We were worried at first, as the boys got off to a slow start," said Coach Stewart Foster. "After the first five dives the boys from Carbon started to get better scores (in their last six dives)."
It was then that Carbon pulled away from Brighton and Highland High Schools. Individually each boy was within a couple of points out of the next diver that placed ahead of them.
The girls also did a great job for their first year of diving. Lacey Pugliese placed 11th out of all the girls in the finals. This was Lacey's first experience at diving, and each meet she kept improving.
"She did some dives she never thought were possible, with good form and technique<" said Foster. "She also did not fail any dives."
Karrisa Nelson placed 16th over all. Nelson had two failed dives that took her score down. She also had a lot of good scores. This was also Nelson's first year of diving, and she improved each day.
"Both girls were good for each other, as they pushed each other and challenged each other to new heights," concluded Foster.
