Pinnacle continues to dominate competition
Pinnacle High School was on fire Friday night as both the boys and girls basketball teams crushed Merit Academy in front of a packed gymnasium. The girls played first and took down the Knights 58-27 before the boys could take the floor and put another win in the books 70-50.
The games were special to those who have followed and attended the school as it was their first senior night as the school readies to have their inaugural commencement ceremonies.
The teams did not disappoint as they gave the home crowd a real show.
The girls are now 9-0 and are looking at running the table on their way to a state title. The Lady Panthers now focus on their two remaining road games, hoping to finish the season a perfect 11-0.
"The girls played really tough," said coach Heidi Kay. "They ran the court the whole game and played really strong defense."
Leading the Lady Panthers in scoring was Sarah Norton who had 18 points and pulled in five rebounds. Also playing well for Pinnacle was Crystal Sherman with eight rebounds and Monique Hullings who scored 12 points and picked the Knights pockets all night long, amassing 12 steals along the way.
The boy's team came out strong and never let up, running their record to 10-1.
Blake Najera has been leading the team all season long, averaging nearly 24 points per game to go with 12 rebounds.
The Pinnacle senior continued his spectacular play on Friday against the Knights, pouring in 17 points to go with 12 rebounds and several near dunks. Stewy Jones also on top of his game for senior night, scoring 15 and setting a team record with 12 assists.
"The team has excellent depth," said coach Jeff Bowen. "In most games I am able to play two completely different units at any time during the contest."
The boys have two tough away games left before they head to the state competition.
They girls will have their tournament at either Rockwell Canyon or Provo, according to Kay.
The boys will gear up for state in Provo or Eagle Mountain. Both tournaments will take place on Feb. 27-28.
