CEU women pick up pair of wins at CNCC's expense
The College of Eastern Utah women's basketball team has struggled in conference play. So it was a breath of fresh air to take on Colorado Northwestern for two games and play some of the best basketball they have played in a while.
On Friday night they easily handed CNCC an 80-57 stomping. And then again on Saturday afternoon they soundly defeated the Spartans 71-51 to pick up their third straight conference win.
CNCC had only eight players make the trip for the weekend and the constant pressure by CEU paid off for a double digit lead by halftime in the Friday game. Kaylie Robison scored four points and five rebounds by the break. Veronica Siqueiros led the way with 10 points and a pair of three pointers. She was also four of five from the line. Adrianna Cordova had also dished out four assists.
In the second half a dominate rebounding performance by the Lady Eagles was exhibited as CEU outboarded the Spartans 56 to 30. Despite a lot of turnovers and sloppy play on the offense, the Lady Eagles defense kept the Spartans in check and CEU cruised to an easy win.
Robison ended with another double/double. She scored 12 points and pulled in 10 rebounds. Siquerios and Cordova both finished with 10 points each. Libby Alon passed out seven assists and added eight points to the total. Overall 14 players scored points for the Golden Eagles.
On Saturday it was a sluggish start for CEU as they trailed for most of the first half. A late surge with two minutes remaining in the half allowed CEU to take the lead. At the half a slim rebounding edge went to CNCC. This was a big turnaround from Friday's rebounding performance by the home team. The half time score was close, CEU 32, CNCC 27.
For the half Robison had eight, Amber Strong had six and Rachel Rasmussen had put up five.
In the second half, CEU went on a 13-2 run. That surge put the game away early in the period. From there is was all Lady Eagles down the stretch as they finished with a 23 point margin.
Strong posted a strong second half performance and ended up with 18 points on 7 for 13 shooting. This included hitting four three's and pulling in five rebounds. Robison also had another good second half as she finished with 17 points. She just missed another double/double as she crashed the boards with nine rebounds.
The Lady Eagles are now on a three game winning streak as they go on the road for the next two weeks. They begin the road swing in Southern Idaho. CEU's conference record is now 3-4.
