Carbon High Lady Dinos falter after huge region eight win
With big expectations upon their shoulders, the Lady Dinos began region eight play last Tuesday night with a convincing 70-27 thrashing of North Sanpete. But the high didn't last long when the Emery Spartans came from behind on Thursday and handed them a 45-37 loss.
Girding for a real battle on Tuesday, the Carbon girls knew who they had to stomp on the Hawks squad. Once they showed they could take out North Sanpete's go-to girls, the Hawks seemed to fold and the Dinos ran away with the game.
Tia Pappas was all over the place, scoring 20 points, and dealing eight assists, four steals and four rebounds to lead the Dino's effort. Pappas was named the Carbon player of the game. Patricia Smith racked up 17 points and Samantha Smith added 12 in the rout.
Feeling good about things the Dinos turned their sights south as they headed into Emery territory. The Spartans have been playing good and always give Carbon a run for their money. But the Dinos took an early lead and just kept edging up the score. By the end of the third quarter Carbon had opened up a five point gap.
Then in the fourth it began falling apart. Emery picked up steam and the Dino offense sputtered. They were just unable to hit the shots they needed. Carbon held things close until about three minutes left in the game. Then a series of missed free throws and a couple of open shots let the game get ugly quick for the Lady Dinos.
"I yelled at them after the game," stated Coach Carlson, "We had the game in hand and they stopped playing to win and just played not to lose. It should have been the opposite with Emery down, they shouldn't have been the ones afraid, but I saw fear in our eyes. This mental thing against Emery is going to kill me."
The team heads over to take on Salem Hills on Tuesday and then returns to the friendly confines to play Juan Diego on Thursday night. Game time is at 7 p.m.
