ST. GEORGE - Waino Victor "Bud" Mackey passed away on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in St. George.
He was born on May 17, 1922 in Clear Creek, Carbon County, to Finnish immigrants Victor and Aleksantra Mackey.
He grew up in Clear Creek and Scofield. He was nicknamed Bud by his sister, Sue. He graduated in 1940 from Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant. He received an associate degree in accounting from LaSalle University.
On May 6, 1951, he married Karma Kofford in Las Vegas, Nev., a marriage that was warm and wonderful for them both.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church.
He was a master mason of the York Rite of Freemasonry Price Carbon Lodge 16 for more than 50 years.
He worked in the Clear Creek mine for five years. He worked for Kraync Motor Co. in Price for over 40 years, starting as a parts man and later as office manager. He retired Sept. 1, 1986 and moved to Roy to be near his daughter and grandchildren.
Bud and Karma spent many happy years traveling to almost every state in the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska. They traveled to the east coast and twice to the west coast of Canada, including the Canadian Rockies. They also took two cruises as well as two trips to Europe. Bud and his daughter, Jeanie, traveled to Finland to the ancestral homes of his parents.
They enjoyed their seven and one-half years in Roy as much as they had in Price. They played bridge with friends, walked every day and took short automobile trips in the western states.
In 1994, they moved to Cedar City to be near their daughter and family. In 2001, they moved to St. George.
He built our home in Price, which was a labor of love for his family. After his son was old enough, he started to fish with him as well as ice skate on Scofield Reservoir.
Father and son would talk for hours about current events and politics. He thought that his son-in-law could make or repair anything. He loved his grandchildren. Daily, he expressed his love to Karma. He was proud of his family and of his Finnish heritage.
Survivors include his wife, Karma; his daughter, Addie Jean "Jeanie" (Charles) Bentley of St. George and Scofield; and his son, Michael Victor Mackey of Denver, Colo. Also surviving are two beloved grandchildren, Kim Marie Ducote (C.J.) of St. George and Christopher Charles Bentley of Sandy; and two great grandsons, Joseph Sage Ducote and Dominic Charles Ducote. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Neelo; and sisters, Sue Kraync, Sylvia House, Selma Mullins and Lily Reese.
Viewing was Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Spilsbury Mortuary, St. George. Graveside services were conducted by Carbon Masonic Lodge 16 on Dec. 19 in the Price City Cemetery.

His family expresses their heart filled gratitude to the staffs of Rocky Mountain Hospice, Ridge View Gardens Assisted Living and Kolob Care Center, who helped our family care for our husband, father and grandfather during his last year of life.
