Carbon downs Emery

It wasn't the best the Carbon Volleyball team has played all year, but it was enough. Enough to sweep the Emery Spartans 25-18, 25-18 25-18. This moves the Dinos one win away from being region eight champs again this year. They hope to do that against Salem Hills next Tuesday.

The Dinos started strong against the Spartans, but slowed down in the middle to llow Emery back in the game. Carbon closed it out for the win. Game two was more of the same with an identical outcome.

In game threee it was the Spartans looking good as they jumped out on team errors by the Dinos to take a small edge. Carbon came back and looked in control until suddenly none of their servers could find their range. Six missed serves gave the ball right back to the Spartans and kept them in the set.

A quick time out called by a frustrated Coach Johnson put the team back in the swing and they closed out the win. There was no celebration from Carbon when the final point was made. A subdued squad knew that their performance was less than they wanted with the state tournament fast approaching.

Britni Greenwood again led her squad with 15 kills and 21 digs. Joy Malone added 11 kills. Julia Potts dished out another 28 set assists. Brittany Gustas added 12 defensive digs.

"It wasn't pretty. But we can't be unhappy about another win." stated Johnson after the match. "We played pretty sloppy. I have ask them to play at their highest level at all times, but they didn't tonight."

Johnson still had some good things to say about Brittany Gustas. "She is like a security blanket whenever she is in the back row. She sees the play and reads the players better than most. Not everyone can do that. We are a better team with her in."

Juan Diego is currently sitting in second place in the region with a pair of losses to Carbon. If they lose or Carbon wins their next game, the Dinos have first place secured. Region play wraps up next week with an away game on Tuesday against Salem Hills and then a final home match Thursday against Delta. Game time for that match is 7 pm.
