As the Utah Hospitals and Health Systems Accociation prepares to hand out their annual awards, local Castleview Hospital is gearing up to receive their honor as one the the state's finest hospitals.

At the Utah Hospitals and Health Systems Association Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 9, 2008, HealthInsight, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) for Utah and Nevada, will recognize five Utah hospitals as recipients of the 2008 HealthInsight Quality Award. The hospitals were selected for demonstrating high quality health care and excellence in performance on publicly reported quality of care measures. These measures come from data that is voluntarily reported by hospitals across the nation. The national hospital rankings used to select recipients are available by visiting

The HealthInsight Quality Award program was launched in September 2004 to promote transparency in health care. According to the Institute of Medicine, transparency in health care is defined as a system that is "accountable to the public, works openly, makes results known, and builds trust through disclosure." By using available quality data to identify high performing providers and publicizing the results, HealthInsight aims to help providers improve health care and help patients become more active and informed participants in that care.

"HealthInsight is a community-based, non-profit organization. We have been a trusted, neutral catalyst for improvement in the healthcare community for more than two decades," says Marc Bennett, HealthInsight President and CEO. "We believe that promoting transparency in our local communities is a critical component of an overall strategy to create a safer healthcare system."

The hospitals selected for awards this year are:

•Orem Community Hospital

•Castleview Hospital

•The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital

•Dixie Regional Medical Center

•American Fork Hospital

The hospital quality data is available by visiting or and selecting Compare Hospitals in your area.

Health Insight, under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, partners with local healthcare providers in nursing home, home health, hospital, and physician office settings to improve the quality of health care for Medicare beneficiaries.
