Carbon got to test their skills Tuesday night against another region eight team that has snuck up in the polls to be right behind them. Juan Diego is sitting in the number four spot in 3A play and the fight they put up against the Dinos shows why. Carbon eked out a five set win after losing the first game. The match seesawed 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 and 8-15 for a Carbon win.

On Thursday they went to North Sanpete and came out on top again with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23 victory.

"This is the worst I have seen. We came out flat, not the best, but still we were able to bounce back," commented Coach Johnson about the Tuesday marathon match.

Game one was Juan Diego from the start. Carbon kept themselves in it, but could not overcome the sluggish beginning to the game. In game two, the Soaring Eagles had a 23-17 edge and it looked bleak for the Dinos, but they came back from the dead and won that game.

"If we hadn't come back in game two like we did, I think we would have lost in three. That would have been bad."

The rest of the match remained a struggle for both teams as Juan Diego claimed set three and Carbon tied it with a victory in set four. The Dinos closed it out in set five to seal the deal.

Joy Malone led the offense with 17 kills. Julia Potts had a good game with 36 set assists, two blocks and three service aces. Brittany Gustas fought for 21 defensive digs.

Instead of being down on her team for their struggles though, Coach Johnson was impressed. "It showed a lot of guts for them to come back and take this win. They didn't give up. It is encouraging to see them want this win and go out and get it."

On Thursday it took Carbon four games to overcome the Hawks. It was game two that was the trouble spot for the Dinos. None of the games were a blow out, but in each Carbon continued to play stronger than their opponent.

Britni Greenwood blasted 22 kills and Potts dished up another 43 set assists.

This time Coach Johnson had a different take on her team's play, "We played really well. A telling stat was the 18 team blocks we had. Usually we average around five. It has been our weakness and if we keep it up we are in good shape for state."

With the win, the Dinos remain on top with a 7-0 region record. Juan Diego is in the number two spot at 5-2, both losses coming from the Dinos.

Carbon takes on the Emery Spartans this Tuesday night for their only match this week. Game time is at 7 p.m.
