Construction phase of 2009 inaugural platform begins with driving of 'first nail'
Utah Sen. Bob Bennett and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi with others from the House and Senate picked up a symbolic hammer and started construction on the 2009 inaugural platform.
The ceremony is the traditional kick-off to preparations for the presidential swearing in.
"On Jan. 20, 2009 Americans and citizens of the world will again turn their attention to the steps of the capitol to listen to a new president and that leader's vision for a renewed American," said Pelosi. We will face that future together as Americans and, therefore, optimists.
