Girl's soccer team enjoys big region eight success
The Carbon Dino girl's soccer squad is heading into unknown territory as they currently sit in a tie for second place in region eight play. After a 4-0 defeat to Salem Hills on Wednesday, they came back and beat North Sanpete 1-0 on Friday. This puts them ahead of both North Sanpete and Delta in the standings with a region record of 2-3 and tied with Salem Hills.
All along Coach Jerad Upwall predicted that his team would be competitive in region eight. The team has proven him right. Against Salem Hills on Wednesday they didn't play their best game and paid the price with the loss.
But on Friday they rallied together for one of their best defensive team efforts yet. They walked away with the 1-0 win over the Hawks. Felicia Olmos made the only goal of the game in the first period. She dribbled down and floated on over the head of the Hawks goalie from about 30 yards out. In an unusual turn, she missed two penalty kicks that could have really iced up the game for Carbon.
"We won the game because of the team defense," stated Upwall about the win. "It was a great defensive game all around. We had several shots on goal that could have easily put us up 5-0, but it was all about defense."
With Juan Diego rolling into town on Friday, Oct. 3, Carbon is grateful for a week off to get ready. Upwall knows they will be a tough team, one of the best in the state, in fact. But his team always learns when they play them, so they actually enjoy the meetings.
Varsity game begins at 3:30 on Friday behind Carbon High.
