Dr. Sterling Potter, Michelle Madrigal and Karl Kraync discuss the state's prevention framework incentive grant program with committee members during a Sept. 4 meeting.

The panel is considering focus groups and obtaining information aimed at fostering opiate dependency prevention programs in the area.

The meeting was attended by Four Corners staff, representatives from the Businesses Expansion and Retention Project, Carbon Commissioner Johnny Jones, Ann Evans from the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce, representatives from the Southeastern Utah District Health District, David Cox of the Carbon School District, representatives from CEU Mining Department and medical professionals. One main focal point was the shortage of employable workers in the area and the fact that the situation is heightened by drug problems.

The group also discussed treatment options for those who have never been part of the legal system, but still suffer from opioid dependency.

While some in the group favor the conventional detox and counseling method of treatment, others are looking to new medical intervention to curb the problem. Members hope that, though continued data retrieval, they will find a common ground on which to stand.

The group's meetings are open to public comments and local residents may send correspondence to Four Corners Behavioral Health.
