Letter to the editor: A boycott

By CLAIRE MANTONYA
Executive Director Utah Devel. Disabilities Council
Salt Lake City

Editor:

The Utah Developmental Disabilities Council is a statewide advocacy organization dedicated to the full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in our communities.

Our board voted recently to write this letter because the movie "Tropic Thunder" opened in Utah this past week. This R rated comedy is very inappropriate and depicts Ben Stiller in a film within a film as "Simple Jack", a man with intellectual disabilities.

This is a extraordinarily negative portrayal of someone with intellectual disabilities making liberal use of the " r" word. People with intellectual disabilities deserve respect and they want people to refrain from use of the "r" word because it is very hurtful. Please join our council and boycott this movie and tell your friends and family to join you, too.

We believe that people should not profit by disrespecting other people.
