Lady Dinos post decisive region win
|Whitney Willians smashes one of her three hits on the day. She finished a single short of hitting for the cycle on Thursday.|
With gale force winds gusting hard and making every throw, pitch and hit an adventure, the Lady Dino Softball team showed they had what it takes to overcome and blow the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle right off the field with a 9-3 win. It was their first region win of the year.
Juan Diego started off first with a run, but the Dinos came back and doubled them up to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
Again the Soaring Eagle scored and the Dinos doubled them up in their half of the inning to lead 4-2.
Confidence soared. Paige Pinedo threw a good game, backed up by solid fielding behind her to keep Juan Diego off the boards for the next three innings.
Coach Pinedo was delighted with his team's defensive effort. He pointed out that Kelsey Gillespie had one of her best games yet as she made several key plays including snagging a line drive and throwing out the runner off first to end the game with a double play.
Meanwhile the Dinos continued to keep their bats charged and put up an impressive 19 hits in the game. Whitney Williams just missed hitting for the cycle.
She had a double, triple and a home run, but struck out in her last at bat.
Erika Potts slammed one directly into the heart of the gale and it still bounced off the fence. On any other day that ball would have soared over the fence, but instead Potts settled for an RBI double.
Brianne Vogrinec and Brittany Gustas also each hit a double. Gustas was 3-3 in her first three at bats in the game, she ended 3-5. Sarah Norton also had three hits in the game.
"This game was important. It was really good for us with the big doubleheader with Emery coming up next Tuesday," stated Coach Pinedo. "The games with Emery are always wild and we need to strap it on and be ready to play."
Tuesday's doubleheader will start at 2:30 p.m. down on the Carbon High softball field. Emery is one of the top ranked teams in 3A again this season.
