Paige Pinedo pitches against a team during the regular season last year.

Wins have been few and far between in the past few years for the Lady Dino softball team, but finally the young team seems to have come of age and the 2008 season has been good to them so far.

The team opened against Grand and won in a 4-0 shutout. Then they took on South Sevier and trounced that team 14-4.

Against Grand on Wednesday Carbon scored single runs in the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th innings.

In the second and third innings Grand had bases loaded and no one out. With the help of two double plays the Dinos got out of both jams without giving up a run.

"We made six errors in the first fourinnings and it showed that we have only been outside one time," commented Coach Pinedo, "Even withthe errors we didn't give up a run the entire game."

Paige Pinedo pitched the entire game. She struck out three and only gave up two hits. Erika Potts was three for four at the plate and one of those hits was a double. Tammy Harwood was twofor three with an RBI.

The Friday match against South Sevier was again a show of good defense and powerful offense from the Dinos. Carbon jumped on top quick with a three run first inning and then tacked one on in the third.

South Sevier threatened in the first with bases loaded but the Dinos shut it down. However, South Sevier was right back in it with a four run fourth.

But the Dinos had the ability to take the game back with a five run fourth of their own. They shut down South Sevier after that inning while continuing to add to their own lead. The Dinos added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to finish off the game.

Carbon had 12 hits and only one error in the game. Whitney Williams broke the fourth inning tie with the first of her two home runs in the game. Her second was a three run blast in the fifth. She also hit a triple. Harwood also tripled and Pinedo helped her own case with a double driving in a run.

So far this season, Carbon is showing some good power at the plate. Coach Pinedo is hoping to see that more consistently this season as his team heads towards region action.

"They are doing a lot of things right and have a good mental approach to the game," he said. "We are going to St. George and will face tough 4A Pineview and that will be a real test for these girls. But I know we are up to it."

The Lady Dinos will head to south this week and have a home game on March 25 against Union with game time at 3 p.m.

And just like the big leagues, region action will start April 1 with Carbon traveling to North Sanpete.
