Health district, environmental quality officials schedule local lead testing day
Southeastern Utah Health District and the state department of environmental quality have scheduled a lead safety day on Feb. 14.
Representatives will conduct lead contaminant tests on toys, jewelry, pottery, clothing and furniture from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the convention center at the county fairgrounds. Limit will be five items per person.
Lead poisoning is considered the most preventable environmental childhood disease, however high lead levels pose serious health risks for nearly one million youth in the U. S.

Sen. Bennett announces nearly $685,000 in federal fire department grants for Utah
On Jan. 18 the office of Utah Sen. Bob Bennett announced that 11 state fire departments are to receive nearly $685,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Fire Administration.
The grants will be provided for departments to purchase protective equipment and improve overall safety operations.
"Many of our fire departments operate on insufficient budgets making it difficult to buy the equipment they need," said Bennett, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee that approves the funding for fire grants each year. "These grants help make up the difference to ensure our hard working firefighters stay safe while on the job.
Carbon High School prepares to host CCHFC family night program on Jan. 24
CCHFC family night activities will be presented Jan. 24 at Carbon High School in Price. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6 p.m.
Child care, activities, snacks and prizes for individual age groups will be provided.
Starting at 6 p.m., guest speaker Mike Schlappi will share his personal experiences with attendees.
Schlappi's story began with a tragic shooting accident which left him paralyzed and evolved into a lifetime of personal victories. The guest speaker's message includes humor and motivation as he offers suggestions on how people can realize their dreams and create their futures.
