Carbon High girls swim team comes on strong at home meet

The Carbon High girls had six swimmers take first place in their opening competition vs. the Delta Rabbits.

"Our girls did an outstanding job, said Carbon Coach Phyllis Cox. "We had six first place finishes out of eight individual events and two out of three first place finishes in the relays."

Finishing first were, Krissia Beatly, Erica Perkins, April Sorensen, Liz Kobe and Zoe Hume.

Cross Country competes at state

Carbon boys placed 12th as a team at the state cross county championships in Salt Lake City.

Kent Olson place 32nd as Carbon's first runner. Kent had a good time of 17:49 on the tough three mile coarse. Jared Richens and Andrew Bates were Carbon's second and third place finishers as they have been all season.

According to coach Stew Foster, Patricia Smith was the only Carbon girl to qualify for state. Smith ran the three miles in 20 minutes and 20 seconds to finish in 19th place. Smith beat out one of the girls who beat her at region, reported Foster, a major accomplishment for Smith.

"With the times we achieved, we felt good about the results," said Foster. "We always will try to do better, but will have to wait until next year."

Carbon dive goes flying high

Carbon divers went to Tremonton for a six dive meet on Oct. 20.

Most of the divers were not in condition at the time so we did not do 11 dives, said coach Stew Foster.

Travis Hobbs placed fourth overall. Hobbs failed one of his dives for no score. This knocked him down from second into fourth. Nick Torres had a good meet, placing fifth overall with his best scores over last year, reported Foster.

"We had four freshman divers that started this year," said Foster. "They are just learning but gave a good account of themselves. Kenny Hobbs placed ninth, Dwight Denny placed 10th and T.J. Bettino placed 11th.

In the girls diving meet Megan Barnett placed sixth.

The next Carbon diving meet in Nov. 3 at Park City.
