On Oct. 2 the United States Senate voted to support an amendment by Utah Senator Bob Bennett that will expedite a plan by the United States Department of Energy to move uranium tailings in Grand County away from the Colorado River.

Bennett said he believed that the cleanup could be done by 2019 and that the amendment requires the secretary of energy to do just that. The amendment was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2008.

The amended plan was put forth by Bennett due to the length of time allowed for the DOE's original bill.
