Firefighters from Helper battle a small grass fire on Martin Road in early July. This year, while the big blazes have grabbed all the headlines, small grass fires like this have taken a toll on fire departments all over the state. Thousands of acres have burned a few at a time because of a careless cigarette or an illegal firework. Officials urge residents to be cautious about any kind of sparks or fires they may generate.
