The Carbon High Dino's wrestling team continues to impress this year with wins over Juan Diego and Altamont in the last couple of weeks.
Carbon only lost two matches in the Juan Diego dual. Coach Dave Smith's outstanding wrestler for that match was Preston Lodeserto who wrestles at 135 pounds. "Lodeserto is a team captain and the leader of our squad this year," said Smith.
Altamont then came to town on Jan. 11 and gave the Dinos a test. "Even though they are only a 1-A school they have a great team," commented the Carbon High coach. Altamont came in sporting a 15-1 record having placed first in two tournaments, but the Dinos prevailed 45-30. This dual's outstanding wrestler was Marcus Rowley who has been wrestling junior varsity but stepped into the Dino varsity lineup and did an outstanding job according to Smith.
Next the Carbon wrestlers traveled to the Rocky Mountain Rumble and found out just how tough some of the state competition is. According to Smith the rumble was one of the toughest tournaments in the United States for the whole year. The tournament included 64 teams from nine states.
"We wrestled well on day one," said Smith. "But we seemed a little tired, our team looked like they had wrestled for three or four straight days, which in fact they had," continued the Carbon high coach. Carbon finished 30th at the tournament but Smith feels that the experience showed his wrestlers just what they need to do to get ready for state.
Carbon's current record is 11-4-1 with the Delta Duels coming up this Friday and Saturday. Carbon will wrestle at home on Jan. 24. against North Sanpete and Jan. 26 against North Sevier.
