Matheson selected to serve on federal energy, consumer issues subcommittees

Rep. Jim Matheson was selected to sit on three United States House of Representatives subcommittees last week.

The Utah congressman will sit on the health; energy and air quality; and commerce, trade and consumer protection subcommittees.

"Whether it's cleaning up the Moab tailings pile, fighting against high level nuclear waste or protecting kids from adult material on the Internet, I am in the right place at the right time to pursue an agenda that is important to Utah families," said Matheson.

Businesses, health district slate local heart awareness campaign for women

During the first two weeks of February, Downtown Alive and the Southeastern Utah Health District will be painting the town red with special savings and healthy heart screenings at participating locations in Price.

The two-week event will be promoting National Heart Awareness for Woman Month.

Merchants on Main Street in Price have plans to turn downtown bright red with paint, lights and banners and to offer free cholesterol and blood pressure screenings to interested Carbon County residents.

State's agriculture, food department offers specialty crop production grants

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food encourages Castle Valley farmers and stakeholders to apply for grants to assist with speciality crop production.

A total of $103,000 is available for projects enhancing the competitiveness of specialty crops.

Application deadline is Feb. 28. Speciality crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts and nursery products, including floriculture.
