Attorney general, state officials plan to check AMBER Alert system on Saturday

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and other state officials plan to test Utah's AMBER alert system on Saturday.

Jan. 13 - National AMBER Alert Day - will become an annual test date along with Aug. 25, the anniversary of the 1982 abduction of Rachael Runyan near Sunset.

The state's system relies heavily on the news media to post warning on Web sites and broadcasts. Members of the public may also receive AMBER alerts on cell phones, regardless of service providers. Carbon County residents may visit for information.

Prevent Child Abuse Utah slates Jan. 12 Internet safety training session at Price

Guidance counselors and DARE officers at schools in the Castle Valley will have the opportunity to gain additional training on teaching Internet safety and abduction prevention to local students. Prevent Child Abuse Utah will offer a one-day training course at College of Eastern Utah on Jan. 12.

Participants will receive instruction materials, handouts for students and a stipend. For information, school guidance counselors and psychologists along with DARE and resource officers may visit or contact the organization at 801-393-3366

Natural gas franchise tax set to become effective Feb. 1 for East Carbon citizens

Beginning Feb. 1, East Carbon City residents should be prepared for the inclusion of a franchise tax on natural gas bills.

Once the tax becomes effective, East Carbon consumers will see a six percent increase on their monthly utility bills.

East Carbon was one of the last cities in the state to institute the standard gas tax.

East Carbon officials intend to place the revenues generated by the natural gas tax into the city's general fund for operational expenditure.
